After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin (hook ’em Horns) with three Bachelors degrees (a story for another day), I embarked on a decade-long career as a broadcast journalist. My days as a reporter took me all over the country, and my dream was to be a national correspondent traveling to all the big stories.
After having my first child, my priorities began to shift. Not only was working the long hours and traveling becoming increasingly difficult on me and my family, but I wanted to learn new skills and go deep on a subject rather than chasing the story of the day. I had gotten my Masters in Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth while working as a reporter. It’s the Master’s degree that caught the eye of a vice president at Washington state’s largest utility, who recruited me to build their media relations department. From there I went to work in tech at a company truly working to make the world a better place, and it’s where I am today. I learned a lot transitioning to a new career. My hope is to pass on those learnings in case it can help you.
